Information
Annual, 10–60 cm. high; rather variable, and several varieties have been described (see Henrard l.c.).
Range
Extends eastwards through the Sudan, Kenya and Arabia to India, southwards into Tanzania.

Notes
A. mutabilismay be separated from A. meccana by its subequal glumes (greatest difference in glume length 0·2–2·2 mm. in the former, 2·2–4·2 mm. in the latter). African populations clearly show modal values corresponding to one or both of these ranges, but the distinction is not sharp; moreover Indian plants display an intermediate range. These entities seem to be geographical races rather than independent species.
