Information
Plants variable, clumped or single, 10–40 cm. high. Rhizome thick, horizontal to vertical, distinctly moniliform, occasionally tuberous, bearing fibrous remains of old leaf-bases; roots spongy, swollen at the base, tapering towards the tips. Leaves often dimorphic, distichous or nearly so, ± clasping the base of the peduncle, linear-lanceolate to lanceolate, glabrous or pubescent, sometimes ribbed with raised margin and ribs, 5–30 cm. long, 0.5–2(–5) cm. wide, outer ones wider and cataphyll-like, inner ones petiolate; margins scabrid or ciliate. Peduncles papillate to pubescent particularly in the upper half, occasionally pubescent throughout, 5–40 cm. long. Inflorescence a ± lax raceme, 5–15 cm. long; floral bracts oblanceolate, scabrid to ciliate on the margins, lower ones up to 2 cm. long. Pedicels usually articulated below the middle, 3–6 mm. long, 2–3-nate at the lower nodes. Perianth open, star-shaped; tepals 8–15 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. wide, 3(–5)-veined, white, sometimes tinged greenish or brownish medially towards the tip outside. Stamens shorter than the tepals; filaments filiform, 2.5–5 mm. long, sometimes broadened towards the base, papillate; anthers, 3.5–5 mm., often somewhat longer than the filaments, twisted when dry. Style declinate. Capsule shallowly 3-lobed to rounded-deltate in cross-section, smooth to slightly ridged, 5–9 mm. long and 6–8 mm. wide, slightly emarginate. Seeds irregularly folded, ± 1.5–2 mm. in diameter. Fig. 7.

Notes
C. subpetiolatum is a widespread and very variable species having been described under a great number of different names. It is characterized particularly by the thick moniliform rhizome and the fusiform roots, the papillate to pubescent peduncle and the relatively large flowers. Hanid in U.K.W.F. (1974) subdivided the complex into two species: Anthericum subpetiolatum and A. monophyllum, based on the degree of leaf-clasping and different leaf-texture and whether the moniliform rhizomes are horizontal or vertical. It might be possible to give varietal status to these forms, but transitional forms occur, and we also suspect strongly that the habitat may influence these growth forms. One form (e.g. Gillett 13199 fromK1, Greenway 13894 fromT1, and Milne-Redhead & Taylor 7316 fromT3) with a robust corm has been identified to Anthericum brehmerianum Poelln. (reduced to synonymy above). This form may represent a link to the next species where the corm elongates to a distinct stem. The complex displays different chromosome numbers, but these have not been found to correlate with particular morphological forms.Chromosome number: 2n=16 ( A. Bjørnstad 1155 from Tanzania, Iringa District) or 48 ( A. Bjørnstad 551 from Uganda, Ankole District), cf. Nordal et al. in Mitt. Inst. Allg. Bot. Hamburg 23 (1990).
