Notes
Although the type and some other specimens from Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru, Mt Kenya and Karisimbi are distinctive in their caespitose habit with many (20–30 in some plants) stems, after looking through material from the whole world I am not confident of the status of A. caespitosa. There are specimens even from these areas which are very similar to somewhat tufted plants collected in Europe; a number of intermediates is not easily placed. I prefer to follow Reimers who, after a study of material throughout its range (including Volkens 1529 and Schlieben 4849 which Pichi Sermolli cites under his A. caespitosa), concluded one species was involved. Material referable to A. caespitosa occurs at a high altitude. Johns (Pterid. Trop. E.A.: 22 (1991)), treats it as var. caespitosa Pic. Serm. but I can find no reference to such a combination. R. Wingfield considered (in his unpublished list of Tanzanian Pteridophytes) that A. caespitosa was a robust form linked by intermediates. Peters records a sight record from the W Usambaras, between Kingo and Kwai but I have seen no material. Curiously the species is omitted from Hedberg, Afroalpine Vascular Plants.
