Information
stem short, densely leafy; leaves bi-ternately cut, glabrescent, the segments stalked, wedge shaped, 3-lobed, or 3-parted, deeply cleft; petioles villous; flower stalk 1–2 flowered, villous below, woolly above the involucre; sepals numerous, silky. Stems 6–8 inches high, densely covered with leaves, and produced into a long, one or two-flowered, scapelike peduncle, 2 feet high or more. Leaves on long petioles, rigid, twice or thrice parted and variously cut. β. is generally held for a distinct species; but I find, in specimens from the same locality, and even on the same root, that the leaflets vary much in the degree of incision.
