Notes
Sorghum purpureo-sericeum and S. versicolor are very closely related. Justification for recognizing them as distinct species rests upon the bimodal frequency curve of their spikelet lengths, their refusal to hybridise (Garber in Univ. California Publ. Bot. 23: 317 (1950)), and their differing geographical distributions. S. dimidiatum is a curiosity from the Sudan with the lower glume sharply constricted across the middle, dividing it into a brown oblong lower portion and a pallid triangular upper portion. It is freely interfertile with S. purpureo-sericeum, as also is S. deccanense, an Indian variant with exceptionally hairy spikelets (Garber, op. cit.: 328).
