Tufted perennial up to 125 cm high; leaves 6.5–20 cm x 1–5.5 mm, flat, green. Racemes paired, 4.5–7 cm long, gathered into a scanty, false panicle; internodes and pedicels cuneate, ciliate. Sessile spikelet 5–8 mm long, not including the 2–3.5 mm long, very pungent callus; lower glume linear, deeply depressed between the dorsal wingless keels, glabrous, 2-toothed at the tip; upper glume with an awn 3–6 mm long; upper lemma 2-toothed, with a puberulous awn 20–40 mm long. Pedicelled spikelet 5–7 mm long; lower glume lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, glabrous on the back, ciliolate on the margins, with an awn 3–5.5 mm long (the upper glume with an awn 1.5–4 mm long).
