Information
Small tree to about 12 m. tall. Branchlets glabrous or pubescent with sparse to moderately dense short simple hairs, sometimes accompanied by a few longer and stouter glandular hairs, these hairs occasionally dense. Leaves subcoriaceous, entire, in the Flora Zambesiaca area narrowly lanceolate to oblong, acuminate, glabrous except on the midrib on the ventral side of the leaf, 20–120 mm. long, 8–35 mm. broad; petioles 5–10 mm. long, pubescent or glabrous. Peduncles 15–30–flowered, 100–150 mm. long; pedicels 2–6 mm. long; peduncles and pedicels normally pubescent, occasionally glabrous. Bracts at the base of the pedicel, 3–5 mm. long, pubescent, broadly to narrowly ovate. Bracteoles insertedd from 1/4 to 3/4 of the pedicel from its base, 1·0–1·5 mm. long, narrow, pubescent. Calyx segments 5, fused for about 1/3 of their length, triangular, c. 2·5 mm. long, shortly and rather sparsely pubescent on the outer surface, margins densely ciliate. Corolla pale green tinged red, to yellow, to creamy white, obconical to slightly urceolate, glabrous, 8–10 mm. long, 4–5 mm. broad, lobes 5, small, imbricate, triangular, obtuse, 0·7–0·8 mm. long, 1·0 mm. broad. Stamens 10, 1/2 3/4 of the length of the corolla; filaments pubescent, geniculate; anthers c. 0·8 mm. long, thecae deeply divided. Ovary globose, 5–celled, c. 2 mm. long and broad, sparsely and shortly pubescent; style 1, glabrous, 6–8 mm. long, about equalling the corolla; stigma small, capitate. Ripe capsule 5–7 mm. in diameter.

Notes
Sleumer (loc. cit.) recognized a large number of infra–specific taxa within A. salicifolia, most of them confined to Madagascar or the Mascarene islands. These he distinguished on the basis of leaf size and shape and on the presence or absence of glandular hairs. He regarded all specimens from continental Africa as belonging to the same variety as the type of the species, which comes from Madagascar, calling this variety A. salicifolia var. pyrifolia (Pers.) Oliv. Although some specimens from the Flora Zambesiaca region have leaves so large that they correspond to A. salicifolia var. megaphylla Sleumer, a variety said by him to be confined to Madagascar, there is no discontinuity in the variation of the continental specimens as regards either leaf size and shape or pubescence and no question of more than one infraspecific taxon being represented there, whatever may be the case on Madagascar and the Mascarene islands.
