Information
Climber, up to 6 m long; branches often reddish, glabrous or pubescent when young. Leaves with petiole 3–13 cm long; blade simple, ovate to suborbicular, 5–20 x 5.5–25 cm, cordate at the base, acute at the apex, entire to ± deeply 3–5-lobed, with serrate or crenate margins, glabrous to pubescent. Inflorescences lax to dense, 5–10 cm long, the ultimate cymes of flowers subcapitate; peduncle 2–6 cm long, with tendril; pedicels 1–2 mm long. Calyx entire or shallowly lobed, glabrous. Petals oblong-ovate, greenish, yellowish or reddish, c. 1.5 mm long, glabrous. Disk cup-shaped, about half the length of the ovary. Fruits red to purplish black, subglobose, c. 1 cm in diam. Seeds brown, 7–9 x 4–6 x 2.5 mm, shiny.
Range
S3 widespread in tropical Africa, southwards to Botswana and westwards to Senegal.
