Notes
A.S. Thomas 54 (Uganda, Masaka District, Sese Is., Bugala, Mugoye, 4 June 1932) is clearly this species but has long inflorescences with 1–3 basal branches. Maitland 515 (Uganda, Mengo District, Mabira Forest, Dec. 1922) has abnormal inflorescences with pedicels ± 5–6 mm. long. E.J. & C. Lugard 508 (Kenya, Elgon, 12 Jan. 1931) has an extraordinary multibranched abnormal (galled?) inflorescence. A sterile specimen S.A.Robertson & Luke 5515 (Kenya, Lamu District, Witu Forest, 11 Nov. 1988 at 18 m.) appears close – nothing else has been seen fromK7 nor at low altitude. Mt. Hanang (Mbulu District) populations have been variously referred to A. stachyanthus or A. rubifolius, e.g. Greenway 7732 (Hemit, 2225 m.) and Polhill & Paulo 2298 (above Katesh, 1980 m.). I have referred them to A. ferrugineus but am far from certain about the correctness of this treatment.
