Notes
A. granvikii has been kept apart by some authors owing to the unusually deep lobing of the leaves. It would seem to be the predominant form on Elgon, but has also been collected in Kenya (Elgeyo District: Marakwet Hills, Dale 3402!; Aberdare Mts., Kinangop, Napier 682!) thus there is no very definite regional criterion for distinction. There is a clear range of variation between these very deeply-lobed forms and others such as Humbert 7511! (Belgian Congo, Kanzibi marsh) where the lobes fail to reach half the radius of the lamina, indeed it is scarcely possible—if A. ellenbeckii and A. granvikii are kept apart—to know with which A. hillii should be synonymized. In the apparent absence of any character correlating with that of the leaf-lobing, it seems advisable to relegate A. granvikii to synonymy with A. ellenbeckii subsp. ellenbeckii. A. mildbraedii var. villosa appears from its type description to be merely a hairy form of typical A. ellenbeckii.
