Names
ALAFIA zambesiaca Kupicha [family APOCYNACEAE], in B.J.B.B. 51: 153, t. 1 (1981) & in F.Z. 4, 1: 490, t. 117 (1985); Leeuwenberg in K.B. 52 (4): 814 (1997). Type: Zambia, Kasama District, 5 km E of Kasama, Robinson 4041 (K, holo, EA!, M, PRE, SRGH, iso.)
Information
Liana or climbing shrub 2–15 m high, without latex; trunk 1.5 cm in diameter or more; branches dark brown with pale brown lenticels; branchlets glabrous. Leaves petiolate; blade (narrowly) elliptic or ovate, 1.5–6.5 cm long, 0.6–3 cm wide, obtuse to acuminate at the apex, cuneate or rounded at the base, glabrous, with 5–8 pairs of rather straight secondary veins forming an angle of 45–55° with the midrib; petiole 1–3 mm long, glabrous. Inflorescence terminal, 1.5–2.5 cm long, few-flowered, rather lax, glabrous or puberulous; peduncle 2–12 mm long; pedicels 2–10 mm long. Flowers fragrant; sepals (narrowly) ovate, 2–2.6 mm long, 0.8–1 mm wide, acute or acuminate at the apex, with one colleter near the edge; corolla white or cream; mature bud with a narrowly oblong or ovoid head about 2/3 of the bud length, ciliate; tube 6–8.7 mm long; lobes obliquely and narrowly elliptic or oblong, 9–9.3 mm long, 2–3.3 mm wide, rounded, ciliate; stamens with apex above and below mouth of the corolla tube, inserted 3.5–4.5 mm from the base; style 3–4 mm long; ovules ± 50 in each carpel. Fruit brown, 15–40 cm long, 0.3–0.5 cm in diameter; seed 9–15 mm long, 1.5–2.5 mm wide; coma 2.5–3.5 cm long.
