Information
A densely cæspitose perennial, 2/3–2 1/2 ft. high. Culms erect, slender, simple, 1–2-noded towards the base, densely and softly tomentose especially towards the panicle, or almost glabrous. Leaf-sheaths longer than the lower internodes, finely striate, glabrous, or more often loosely to densely pubescent, the lowermost persistent, usually elongated, comparatively broad, rather loose; ligule truncate, up to 1 lin. long, membranous; blade very narrowly linear to filiform, with a hard obtuse or subacute tip, up to 1 ft. long, convolute or folded, up to 1 lin. (rarely more) wide when flattened, stiff to rigid, erect, glabrous, or loosely to densely pubescent. Panicle linear- to lanceolate-oblong or lanceolate in outline, dense and continuous, or more or less lobed and sometimes interrupted below, 1 1/2–5 in. long, 1/6–1 1/4 in. wide; rhachis tomentose; lowest branches up to 1 in. long; pedicels very short. Spikelets at first elliptic, at length gaping, 2 1/4–3 1/4 lin. long, purple, or variegated with brown and purple, or greenish. Glumes with thin hyaline margins, ciliolate or scabrid on the keel especially above the middle, minutely pubescent on the sides towards the apex, or glabrous; lower narrowly lanceolate or linear-lanceolate, acuminate, 1 3/4–3 lin. long, 1-nerved; upper elliptic, acuminate, 2 1/4–3 lin. long, 3- (rarely 1-) nerved. Florets 1–3. Valves elliptic or elliptic-oblong, acuminate, 2–3 lin. long, 3-nerved, ciliolate or scaberulous on the keel, asperulous or minutely pubescent on the sides. Valvules as long as or almost as long as the valves, with scaberulous or ciliolate keels. Anthers 1–1 1/2 lin. long. Grain oblong, 1 1/2 lin. long.
