Information
Short-lived perennial; culms 30–120 cm. high, erect or ascending. Leaf-blades sometimes flat, commonly involute, 5–20 cm. long, 1–6 mm. wide. Panicle broadly ovate, 6–20 cm. long, open, with slender branches and pedicels. Spikelets 1.5–2.5 mm. long; lower glume a tiny truncate scale up to 0.1 mm. long (rarely triangular and up to 0.5 mm.); upper glume ovate, glabrous, subacute; lower lemma broadly ovate, glabrous or obscurely pubescent on the margins (sometimes distinctly so in plants from western Africa), obtuse to slightly emarginate. Specimens from western Africa tend to have shorter and hairier spikelets than those from the east. They have been separated as T. bicolor, but variation appears to be quite continuous.
