Names
Adromischus leucophyllus [family CRASSULACEAE]
Information
Perennials with suberect to decumbent branches up to 0,1 m long, usually much branched, with fibrous roots. Leaves oblan-ceolate to obovate or orbicular, (16-)20-30(-35) x 15-25(-30) mm, abruptly cuneate, usually rounded at apex, dorsi-ventrally flattened and with distinct horny margin right around leaf, whitish green and with a thick bloom and sometimes with a few darker markings. Inflorescence a spikelike thyrse with l(-4)-flowered cymes, 0,2-0,35 m long, whitish green; pedicel 5-15 mm long. Buds terete and slightly grooved longitudinally, gradually tapering towards apex, at first stiffly erect, later spreading. Calyx 2-2,5 mm long, white and powdery. Corolla with cylindrical tube slightly widened at mouth, 11-13 mm long, white or pale pink; lobes lanceolate-triangular, 3-5 mm long, acute, papillose and with club-shaped trichomes mainly towards throat, white with pink median band. Anthers included. Squamae about square, 1-1,2 mm long and broad, slightly emarginate, broadest at about the middle or below.
Habitat
A very distinct species and although the flowers resemble superficially those of A. caryophyllaceus (no. 16), the square squamae and the club-shaped trichomes, which are restricted to the area around the throat, indicate that A. leucophyllus should not be placed into the section Brevipedunculati.
Use
23. Adromischus leucophyllus Uitew. in Natn. Cactus Succul. J. 9: 58, fig. (1954); Tolken in Bothalia 12: 390 (1978). Type: Cape, Montagu, Hall in NBG 855/33 (AVU 10015, holo.).
Range
Restricted to the mountains between Robertson and Montagu (Cape Province); growing on shallow soil between rocks usually in somewhat shaded position. Flowering period: January, February.
