Adromischus bicolor [family CRASSULACEAE]
Information
Perennials with much branched, tuberous base with short erect branches and with fibrous roots (rarely somewhat tuberous). Leaves obovate to almost orbicular, rarely broadly elliptic, 20-30(-55) X (15-)20-35(-40) mm, abruptly cuneate to subpetiolate, usually truncate, dorsiventrally flattened and with horny margin at apex, grey-green to grey and usually intensely spotted with purplish red. Inflorescence a thyrse with l(2)-flowered cymes, grey; peduncle 0,l-0,2(-0,25) m long; pedicels 1,5-2,5 mm long. Buds terete, abruptly tapering towards apex, spreading. Calyx 1,5-2 mm long, grey tinged purplish red. Corolla with cylindrical tube 10-12,5 mm long, yellowish green tinged red; lobes broadly triangular, 1,5-2 mm long, cuspidate, rough and without trichomes, white to pale pink with purple mucro. Anthers protruding. Squamae square to transversely oblong, 0,6-1 x 1-1,3 mm, slightly emarginate, broadest just below apex.
Habitat
The only species of the section Adromischus which occurs in the eastern Cape. The few available records are from widely separated localities and it is uncertain whether one is dealing with only one species. From Middelburg to Steytlerville the leaves are obovate to orbicular, while Flanagan 1113 (Komga) and Barker 4996 (Steytlerville) have oblanceolate to narrowly ob-lanceolate leaves.
Use
7. Adromischus bicolor P.C. Hutch, in Cactus Succ. J., Los Ang. 29: 15 (1957); Tolken in Bothalia 12: 384 (1978). Type: Cape, near Steytlerville, Hall in NBG 914/47 (BOL, holo.!; NBG!; PRE!; UC!).
Range
Known only from a few localities in the eastern Cape from Steytlerville to near Middelburg and King William's Town; growing usually in exposed rock crevices. Flowering period; December, January.
