Notes
Pichi Sermolli (Webbia 12: 687–696) makes out a case for considering A. poiretii endemic to Tristan de Cunha which, if accepted, results in A. thalictroides being the correct name to employ for the widespread species. After examining Tristan material I am by no means convinced that the differences are adequate and have preferred to follow Alston l.c., Schelpe l.c., R.M. Tryon l.c. and others. The matter is, however, by no means closed. Schelpe maintains the variety var. sulphureum (Kaulf.) R.M. Tryon (see F.Z., Pterid.: 113 (1970) and W. Jacobsen, Ferns S. Afr.: 231, fig. 163b, map 56 (1983)) distinguished by a sparse to dense powdering of yellow on lower surface of the pinnules and records it from E Africa but later did not formally recognise it. This is of very sporadic occurrence and East African material Ihave seen e.g. Uganda, Imatong Mts, near Agora, Eggeling 811! is not very distinctive. Luer, however, Helechos de Chile: 118 (1984) retains A. sulphureum Kaulf. as a distinct species and authentic Kaulfuss material is very densely dusted with yellow. The var. hirsutum (Hook. & Grev.) R.M. Tryon has long gland-tipped hairs on the pinnules and occurs in Peru and Chile.
