Information
Shrub or tree up to 8 m high; young branchlets brownish, pubescent or glabrous. Prickles in pairs, hooked, up to 5 mm long. Leaves: pinnae 2–3 pairs; leaflets 1–2 pairs, ± obovate, up to 20 x 15 mm, veined, glabrous (in Somalia). Flowers cream to white in spiciform racemes up to 3.5 cm long; pedicels 0.5–1.5 mm long. Calyx up to 1 mm long. Corolla 2.5–3.5 mm long. Pods oblong, straight, dehiscent, 2.5–8 x 1.5–2.5 cm, pale brown to straw-coloured, transversely veined. Seeds subcircular, up to 10 x 8 mm; areole c. 2.5 x 2.5 mm.
Range
N1–3; C1, 2; S1–3 from Egypt to Tanzania and in Angola and Namibia, also in Arabia; subsp. detinens (Burch.) Brenan also in southern Africa.
