Notes
Adad, cadaad, jaleefan, jalefon (Som.). The type of A. paradoxa Chiov. represents a shrubby form, up to about 0.6 m tall, with 1–3 pairs of pinnae, and very reduced, up to c. 5 mm long, ± sessile, few-flowered inflorescences, perhaps with purplish filaments. Populations of this form occur in C1 and C2 on limestone and gypsum at 150–360 m altitude. Typical A. hamulosa also occurs in the same general area and in the field the two indeed give the impression of being distinct species. Mr J. B. Gillett has suggested “ A. brevis ” as a new name for this entity, but this has not been published. However, there is also a considerable variation within “ A. brevis ”. From the area near Ceel Buur, Thulin & Warfa 4665 represents a form with mostly 2 pairs of pinnae and large pods closely agreeing with the type of A. paradoxa Chiov., while Thulin & Warfa 4644 is a form with mostly 1 pair of pinnae and (unripe) pods only about 20 x 20 mm. The latter plant was growing gregariously to a height of only about 0.3 m in a gypsum area. Further field studies and better material are desirable before a decision is taken on the taxonomic status of “ A. brevis ”. In the meantime I prefer to include it in A. hamulosa. A record of A. asak (Forssk.) Willd. from C2 (Buulo Burti) by Chiovenda in Atti Soc. Nat. Mat. Modena 66 (1934) is probably based on a specimen of A. hamulosa.
