Shrubby herb up to 1 m or more tall; all parts pubescent to tomentose and sometimes also with long simple hairs. Leaves long-petiolate; blade broadly ovate, up to c. 12(–17) x 10(–13) cm, cordate at the base, acuminate at the apex, with serrate-dentate margins. Flowers in leaf axils or on axillary shoots sometimes merging into panicles; pedicels 1.5–9 cm long. Calyx 6–10 mm long. Petals 7–13 mm long, yellow. Mericarps 12–17, 8–10 x 3–5 mm, 2-seeded, dorsal corner with a 1–2 mm long awn, ultimately stellately spreading and black. Seeds c. 2.5 mm long, papillose.
