Erect herb; stems extremely densely covered with patent long-rayed stellate hairs. Leaves elliptic-lanceolate, 9 cm. long, 2.8 cm. wide, acute at the apex and cuneate at the base, borne on the peduncles at or beyond the middle, coarsely hairy above and beneath, the leaf-surface clearly visible beneath the indumentum; petioles 5–8 mm. long. Inflorescences very numerous, lateral, ± capitate and several- to many-flowered; peduncle 1.5–6 cm. long; bracts large, ovate, acuminate, up to 2.5 cm. long and 1.6 cm. wide, subscarious, hairy outside, with 7–9 ascending dark and conspicuous veins. Sepals lanceolate, acute, 1.5 cm. long and 3.5 mm. wide, hairy. Corolla mauve, about 4 cm. long. Capsule subglobose, about 7 mm. tall, glabrous.

Shrub up to 3 m. tall; rootstock unknown; stems erect, branched above, yellow-tomentose. Leaves ovate, 12 cm. long, ± 6.5 cm. wide, rather acute at the apex, truncate or subcordate at the base, green and pubescent above, densely grey-tomentose beneath; petiole about 1 cm. long. Inflorescences terminal at the ends of the branchlets, forming a long corymbose arrangement. Sepals very small, ovate, 3 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, glabrous or sparsely pubescent. Corolla mauve, narrowly funnel-shaped, 2.4 cm. long. Capsule globose, 9 mm. in diameter, glabrous.

Perennial herb; stems erect, shrubby, up to 0.4 m. tall (fide Hall. f.), at first minutely stellately tomentose, later glabrous. Leaves suborbicular, about 3.5–7 cm. long, 3.5–7 cm. wide, acute, cordate at the base, widely and obtusely sinuate-dentate on the margin, stellately pubescent on both surfaces; petiole about 2–6 cm. long. Inflorescences 3–5-flowered; peduncle axillary, solitary, 3–15 mm. long : pedicels 8–15 mm. long; bracts large, oblong or ovate-lanceolate, up to 1.8 cm. long and 7 mm. wide. Outer sepals the shorter, ovate-lanceolate, 12 mm. long; inner sepals elliptic-oblong, 1.7–2 cm. long and 7 mm. wide, obtuse or emarginate. Corolla white; tube 7.5–11 cm. long, 3 mm. wide; limb dimensions not ascertainable, but stellately pubescent outside on the fasciae. Capsule globose, 12 mm. in diameter, glabrous. Seeds trigonous, tomentose.

Herbs with rhizome. Stems erect or spreading, branched, bearing one inflorescence and several leaves. Petiole sometimes long (up to 9 dm.), the part directly below the leaf-blade calloused; blade elliptic, asymmetric. Inflorescence terminal, much branched, very condensed, the branches with few nodes and with up to 4 two-flowered cymules at each node, subtended by a wide sheathing bract which does not enclose the part of the inflorescence above it, persistent; each cymule backed by a two-nerved prophyll; mesophylls present. Cymule subsessile with the flowers ± side by side but opening at different times; fleshy bracteoles absent. Outer staminodes 2, petaloid; spur-like appendage to hooded staminode absent. Ovary 3-locular, pubescent. Fruit indehiscent, 1–3-seeded. Seed with an aril.

Herb with short rhizome and tufted habit. Stems up to 6 dm. long. Leaves with a petiole up to 9 dm. long, but often less; calloused part of petiole up to 5 cm. long; blade elliptic, asymmetric, antitropic, up to 48 cm. long, acuminate, ± rounded at the base, often tinged reddish below. Inflorescence one per stem, appearing to be axillary, surrounded by up to 6 leaves, much branched, the branches congested with short internodes, subtended by broadly elliptic obtuse or acute strongly imbricate bracts; cymules about 4 at each node, enclosed in a similar broadly elliptic bract about 2.5 cm. long; bracts various shades of red, held vertically, horizontally or more or less inverted, depending on their position in the inflorescence; cymules sessile; ovary pubescent. Flowers pale pink or pale purple, sometimes white, about 2 cm. long. Fruit ellipsoid, obscurely lobed if more than one-seeded, about 9 mm. long and 6 mm. in diameter, not fleshy, with the withered perianth persisting; seed as in Fig. 1/6A, p. 3, brown with a whitish aril. Perennial herbs or shrubs. Leaves alternate, sessile, with revolute margins. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, solitary or few together; phyllaries multiseriate, the outermost recurved; receptacle flat, naked. Florets: ray florets purple to white, 1-seriate, often with staminodes; disc florets yellow, 5-lobed, anthers sagittate, style branches obtuse, dorsally with hairs. Achenes oblong, sparsely hairy; pappus of barbellate bristles in two rows.

Perennial herb or subshrub 0.2–1.2 m high with one to several stems, much branched, erect or less often straggling, from a woody rootstock; stems grey-tomentellous and glandular. Leaves sessile, lanceolate or linear, 1–6 cm long, 0.1–0.4 cm wide, base acute, margins revolute, apex acute and mucronate, white-tomentellous beneath, araneose-puberulous and glandular above but glabrescent. Capitula 6–10 mm long, heterogamous, solitary or in few-headed cymes, these united in many-headed lax leafy corymbs; stalks of individual capitula 2–6 mm long; phyllaries pale green with dark tips, lanceolate to linear, 1.5–7.5 mm long, acute, pubescent. Ray florets mauve, pink or purple, 8–23, tube cylindric, 2.8–3.3 mm long, ray elliptic, 3.5–7.5 mm long, 1.2–1.6 mm wide, slightly glandular-hairy, style 4–4.3 mm long; disc florets yellow or orange-yellow, 16–94, tube cylindric, 4.3–5 mm long, lobes 0.2–0.4 mm long, anthers 2.5–2.7 mm long, style 4.7–6 mm long. Woody herb, 0.3–0.5 m high, hardly branched, single-stemmed?; called stoloniferous by Brenan; stems brown, grey-tomentose, densely leafy. Leaves linear, 0.5–4 cm long, 0.1–0.2 cm wide, porrect, base slightly widened, margins revolute, apex acute and mucronate, sparsely pubescent or glabrous above, white-tomentose beneath. Capitula 8–12 mm long, heterogamous, solitary or in few-headed leafy corymbs, rarely up to 20 heads together; stalks of individual capitula 2–5 mm long; phyllaries with dark tips, 2–8 mm long, pubescent. Capitula with 2 filiform female florets and few to many hermaphrodite disc florets. Anthers caudate. Achenes slightly flattened; pappus absent or occasionally a ring of connected twin-hairs.

Leaves triangular to ovate, 3–6.5 cm long, 2–5 cm wide, base truncate to almost hastate to almost attenuate, margins serrate, apex acute to acuminate, pubescent, glandular, 3-veined from base; petiole 10–25 mm. About 180 species, cosmopolitan but mostly in the north temperate zone.
Rhizome branched, creeping or erect, often ± fleshy, with dense non-peltate scales. Fronds tufted or closely spaced. Stipe sulcate, often pink. Lamina 1–3-pinnate to 4-pinnatifid, rarely simple (not in Africa), mostly glabrous; veins free (save in one non-African species). Sori superficial, mostly J-shaped or U-shaped (but round or oblong in many European species) and furthest end crossing the vein to which the sorus is attached; indusium present and fimbriate or rudimentary or even lacking (not in Africa).

Rhizome long-creeping, slender; scales pale brown or dark-marked, triangular, 0.2–1.2 mm long, 0.3–0.4 mm wide, acuminate, cordate at the base, mixed with multicellular hairs. Fronds few, paired or solitary, 15–40 cm tall; stipe 12–24.5 cm long, minutely pubescent or ± glabrous or with few scales at base. Lamina ± triangular-hastate in outline, 11.5–22 cm long, 12–26 cm wide, with scattered flattened white multicellular hairs, essentially trifid, the apical part pinnate with 12 or more pairs of pinnae; pinnae lanceolate, up to 5 cm long, 1.8 cm wide, attenuate at the apex, deeply pinnatifid with ± 10 pairs of pinnatifid segments about 2–7 mm wide; lateral parts similar to apical but with lowest basiscopic pinna well developed, up to 10 cm long; rachis shortly pubescent. Sori round, ± 1 mm in diameter, 1–10 per segment; indusium sub-reniform, fixed on one side only, persistent or ± disintegrating and scarcely visible.

Rhizome creeping with blackish or black-veined clathrate scales ± 1.5 mm long; fronds single, 15–40 cm tall; stipe slender, 10–20 cm long with few scales and dense very short hairs. Lamina up to 20 cm long, 15 cm wide, tripartite, the parts ± confocal, each simply pinnate but pinnae very deeply divided so as to appear bipinnate; main parts broadly lanceolate in outline up to 18 cm long, 6 cm wide, acuminate but not long-caudate at the apex; each part with 6–9 pairs of pinnae up to ± 5 cm long, 2 cm wide, the apical ones reduced, toothed only at the apex, running together and narrowly decurrent into each other resembling a series of fish-tails; lower pinnae deeply divided into ± 6 elliptic lobes, the largest ± 15 mm long, 8 mm wide, ± entire to bluntly or subacutely lobed or toothed; main lobes of largest pinnae decurrent, separated by narrowly winged midrib 1–2 mm wide. Sori 1–4 per pinna-lobe, ± 1 mm wide; indusium fimbriate and hairy.

Lamina oblong-lanceolate in outline, 23–70 cm long, (6–)10–28 cm wide, acute to acuminate, virtually to quite bipinnate, the pinnules mostly narrowly decurrent; pinnae in 15–20 pairs, lanceolate in outline, 4–18 cm long, 1.5–5 cm wide, attenuate, the basal pair usually markedly smaller and distant; rhachis straw-coloured; pinnules in 7–18 pairs, narrowly oblong, 5–22 mm long, 2–8 mm wide, sharply serrate-dentate or deeply lobed and lobes serrate. Sori oblong, curved or J-shaped, 1–1.5 mm long, 1–7 per pinnule-lobe and 14–70 per pinnule; indusia pale brown, membranous, erose. Fig. 3 (page 9).

Rhizome erect with spreading roots; scales chestnut, lanceolate, 3 mm long, 1 mm wide, attenuate. Fronds tufted, 16–20 cm tall; stipe 5–6 cm long, scaly at base. Lamina oblong-lanceolate in outline, 9–12 cm long, 4–5 cm wide with 10–15 pairs of pinnae; pinnae oblong in outline, 1–2.5 cm long, 0.3–1.3 cm wide, subacute and not attenuate at apex, with 4–5 pairs of pinnules and short apical lobed part; pinnules oblong-ovate, up to about 7 mm long, 5 mm wide, 3–5-lobed and ± crenate, with sparse flattened trichomes beneath. Sori one per pinnule, about 1 mm long; indusia deeply fimbriate.
