A genus of 4 species with a curious disjunct distribution; 2 of the species occurring in tropical Africa, the other 2 in the New World.
Inflorescence of several racemes on an elongated axis; racemes bearing inclined spikelets on a flat rhachis.Spikelets 1-flowered without rhachilla extension, sessile, alternate in 2 rows on a tough axis, disarticulating above the glumes; glumes unequal, the inferior 0–1-nerved, the superior deciduous, 1-nerved, longer than the inferior, equalling and embracing the floret, both dorsally broadly rounded, membranous, acute; lemma almost as long as the superior glume, dorsally broadly rounded, thinly membranous, acute or shallowly emarginate at the apex, shortly awned.Caryopsis ellipsoid.

Stoloniferous perennial; culms up to 60 cm tall, erect or geniculately ascending; lower leaf sheaths often without lamina, tightly packed; leaf laminas 3–5(7.5) cm × 2–6 mm, flat or rarely involute, linear-lanceolate from an auriculate base, glaucous, somewhat rigid, cartilaginous on the margins.Inflorescence 8–25 cm long, erect or nodding, comprising 3–9 racemes 2–8 cm long.Spikelets 4–5 mm long; inferior glume 2.8–3.3 mm long; superior glume as long as the spikelet; lemma 3.4–4.7 mm long, with an awn 0.9–1.5 mm long.
