Liane or scandent shrub, with modified coiled branchlets as climbing aids, or occasionally a much-branched tree, 4–20 m. high; bark pale brown or purplish-brown and striate on the branches. Branchlets coarsely hairy with yellowish-brown subappressed or spreading hairs, soon glabrescent. Leaves 16–30 cm. long; stipules deltoid, ± 2–3 mm. long, caducous but leaving a prominent scar; lateral leaflets 8–12 on either side of rhachis, narrowly oblong or oblong-elliptic, 3–5.2(–8) cm. long, 1.2–2.3 cm. wide, rounded to slightly emarginate at apex, broadly cuneate to rounded at base, rather persistently appressed pubescent on both surfaces but more densely so beneath; primary lateral nerves ± 14–20(–24) on either side of midrib. Panicles on leafy branches, ± 4–14 cm. long, laxly branched with the flowers rather closely arranged towards the top; axes tawny tomentose, sometimes grading to subglabrous on the pedicels; bracts elliptic-ovate to elliptic-oblong, 3–4 mm. long, fugaceous; bracteoles at top of 2–4 mm. long pedicel, elliptic-oblong to obovate-oblong, 2.5–3 mm. long, caducous or somewhat persistent. Calyx 4–5 mm. long, densely covered with short yellowish hairs. Corolla 9–10 mm. long, white, almost always flushed mauve or purple; standard suborbicular, ± cordate, very shortly clawed, glabrous; wings as long as standard and much exceeding keel. Stamens 10, in 2 phalanges. Fruit broadly oblong, abruptly narrowed or rounded at the ends, ± 7–12.5 cm. long, 2–4 cm. wide, scarcely thickened over the seed-cavity, papery, straw-coloured, glabrous, laxly venose, 1–2-seeded.
