Information Perennial herb, suckering to produce clusters of slender spreading stems c. 5 cm long. Leaves rosulate, weakly erect to spreading, grass-like, up to c. 25 cm × 4–8 mm, linear, expanded to c. 15 mm at the clasping base, slightly channelled on the upper surface, rather fleshy, green or tinged brownish, with whitish spots near the base and scattered on the upper surface, the spotting more crowded on the lower surface; margins narrowly cartilaginous with minute teeth 1–3 mm apart. Inflorescence simple, erect to 20–30 cm high; peduncle with a few sterile, brownish, papery bracts 2–3 cm apart. Raceme c. 10 × 3.5 cm, cylindrical, laxly flowered; bracts 5–7 × 3 mm, ovate-acuminate, whitish papery; pedicels 10–13 mm long, with pendent flowers. Perianth orange-scarlet, green-tipped, 20–25 mm long, c. 4.5 mm in diameter across the ovary, cylindric-trigonous, constricted slightly and abruptly just below the mouth, base tapering into the pedicel; outer segments free to the base with tips widely spreading above the constriction. Stamens and stigma not or scarcely exserted. Capsule slightly stipitate, c. 11.5 × 4.5 mm, oblong. Seeds c. 1.75 × 3.5 mm, narrowly winged, dark brown.
