Biography
British gardener who was employed by the Horticultural Society of London at Chiswick. He collected plants in South America where he married a Peruvian woman and eventually died at Chachapoyas. The genus Mathewsia Hook. & Arn. was named in his honour. His surname is occasionally cited 'Matthews' and specimens are sometimes marked simply with 'A.M.'.
