Biography
Russian entomologist born in Iran, where his father worked for the Imperial Bank. George Popov was given a post in the Middle East Anti-Locust Unit (1943) by Boris Uvarov and his career in locust research would eventually take him to Africa, Socotra (for the Desert Locust Survey Nairobi), Russia and Bangladesh. When not travelling he was based at the Anti-Locust Research Centre in London, remaining there until his retirement in 1984. He stayed scientifically active undertaking contracts for the Food and Agriculture Organisation and other agencies. Popov was one of the most experienced travellers in the Arabian Peninsula, for which he was awarded the Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal (1995) by the Royal Society for Asian Affairs. Over a thousand botanical specimens associated with his studies on the ecology of locusts were donated to BM between 1966 and 1997.
