Puckle is sending 106 drawings of grasses, sedge plants and of the Amaranthus that comes up each year after harvest and which the 'natives' say is fattening for their cattle. It is generally assumed that they take no trouble over the feed for their draft bullock, but this is not the case. They grow with their corn the sorghum expressly for this purpose. Puckle's object in collecting specimens is to draw attention to the grasses for hay and to show how it can be very profitably grown and improve the condition of the cattle. Puckle sent a book of dried specimens in 1873 to Sir Joseph Hooker, who kindly named them for him. He thinks that if attention were paid to the culture of grasses in Mysore it would be of great benefit. During the local rains, Hariali [Cynodon dactylon] can be grown and cut three times between July and October and it makes the best hay, for which the Commissariat Department give 45 to 50 Rs a ton. Under proper irrigation it would yield six crops a year, but it is not cultivated. Puckle asks for the name of the Romnah[?] grass of the Deccan. It grows easily on dry land and is very nourishing fodder. Some of the other grasses in the book Puckle is sending might be put to use, but the 'natives' want showing how to utilise them. Puckle adds, in postscript, that he had great success in bringing on the gardens of Bangalore by setting up shows and getting fresh imported seed. Their status has been greatly raised since 1867 and he believes the same could be done for the agriculturalists if they were not so hampered by the conditions of their land tenure. Dr Hooker would know the name of the Deccan Romnah grass: grown at Bangalore during the rainy season, with above average rainfall it yielded very heavy crops.
