Shrub or small tree 1–5(–6) m tall, sometimes with drooping branches. Leaves ± coriaceous, oblong-elliptic to elliptic or broadly oblanceolate, 15–33 cm long, 4–12 cm wide, shortly acuminate, subacute or acute (± obtuse in some damaged leaves) at the apex, cuneate to rounded or subcordate (or rarely very narrowed) at the base, serrate, the teeth ± black-tipped when dry, or in places subentire; lateral veins 13–20, lying in depressed hollow above but actual veins prominent, very prominent beneath; numerous veins between the veins and tertiary venation of very numerous parallel veinlets, between the secondaries, more or less in direction of laterals, prominent; petiole 4 mm long; stipules lanceolate, 3–7 mm long, striate, also present on internodes and numerous in a short distance without any associated leaves. Inflorescences pseudo-racemose, up to 35 cm long, with 1–6-flowered cymes from node-like abbreviated branches; peduncles 10–12 cm long; pedicels 10–15 mm long, jointed 1–3 mm above the base. Sepals narrowly elliptic-ovate, 8 mm long, 3–3.5 mm wide, becoming orange-red in fruit. Petals yellow or orange-yellow, elliptic, 8–12 mm long, 4–6 mm wide, rounded at apex. Anthers narrowed to apex, 5–6 mm long. Drupelets scarlet, subglobose, 6 mm long, 5–6 mm wide (probably eventually turn black). Fig. 7 (p. 51).
