The 5.5 million specimens in the Natural History Museum in Vienna comprise an astonishingly high number of types'at least as many as 150,000, and quite possibly more, and this despite the fact that approximately one-sixth of the collection was burnt during World War II. The list of collectors reads like the "Who's Who" of botany: Jacquin, Martius, Hackel, Reichenbach, Cufodontis, Drge, Ecklon, Haenke, Hildebrandt, Hooker, Kotschy, Menyhart, Peter, Petit, Pohl, Poeppig, Schimper, Sieber, Stolz, Zeyher, and many others.
