The Herbario Nacional de Venezuela was founded on 1921 like part of the Commercial and Industrial Museum of Venezuela, under the direction of the wise person and naturalist Henri Pittier. The Herbario Nacional de Venezuela has the greater collection of botanical samples in the country (400,000 specimens), being this way the main source of reference of the Flora of Venezuela, that includes approximately 16,000 species of plants; also having a great number of samples of other countries of Neotropic. It has approximately 4,000-5,000 types specimens in its holdings.
The collection held by Herbario Nacional of Venezuela has a greatest representation of the flora of tepuis of Venezuelan Guayana and other places like Coastal Cordillera. The collection has representation of large families of Venezuela, like Araceae, Leguminosae, Bromeliaceae, Orchidaceae, Piperaceae, Melastomataceae and Rubiaceae.
