The Herbarium Tubingense (TUB) is part of the University of Tuebingen. TUB was a very important herbarium in the early 19th century. The Esslinger Reiseverein (Unio itineraria) was based in a small town (Esslingen) very close to Tuebingen. It was an organisation that paid botanists to travel and collect plants, and sold the collections in large sets. It was very active until 1836. Enormous collections of the Unio itineraria went directly to TUB. Today, TUB has about 250 000 specimens from all parts of the world, some of which date back to 1836. Recent research focus is the evolution and ecology of fungi. Ongoing systematic research in higher plants is related to co-evolution with parasitic and mutualistic basidiomycetes.
