The Herbarium of the Darwinion Institute (SI) houses approximately 700,000 specimens of vascular plants, mainly from Argentina and other South American countries, together with a brief but valuable collection of Cryptogams. SI houses a relatively significant type collection within the region, with over 4,500 sheets spotted from the general collection, mostly from Latin America, and already digitized for the Latin American Plant Initiative (LAPI Project).
Within the significant collections (due to the number of specimens and/or historical value) the following can be mentioned: Frère Apollinaire, C. Baenitz, M. Barros, O. Buchtien, L. Castillón, A. Donat, F. Felippone, K. Fiebrig, A. Flossdorf, E. Hassler, C. M. Hicken, G. Herter, P. Joergensen, T. Meyer, J. E. Montes, C. Osten, C. G. Pringle, T. Rojas, A. G. Schulz, L. Sodiro, J. Steinbach, I. Vattuone, S. Venturi, E. Werdermann, A. Woolston.
The Fabaceae and Asteraceae holdings are especially valuable since they include the complete collections, together with numerous nomenclatural types, of A. Burkart and A. Cabrera. SI Herbarium is increasing its holdings rapidly (close to 7,000 specimens per year) as a result of field work and exchanges with other herbaria worldwide. It also holds valuable collections of phototypes, such as the one edited by the Field Museum at Chicago (over 40,000 pictures), and micro-slides sets of historical collections such as the herbaria of Jussieu, de Candolle, Willdenow, Linnaeus, and Lamarck.
