The Department of Botany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History is one of the largest herbaria in the world, with approximately 4.5 million specimens. The collections are of significant historical and scientific value, and are used as the basis for research at the Department and by scientists around the world. Some parts of the collections have been made available via the Internet as searchable databases. Research at the Department deals with various issues of systematic botany, where the external morphology, internal anatomy, and sequences of DNA are used to formulate hypotheses of common ancestry and evolutionary patterns. Taxonomic revisions of different genera and morphological treatments are other fields of research.
