The Botanische Staatssammlung München (Munich), founded in 1813, holds approximately 2.5 million plant specimens. The collection covers all plant groups and geographical areas. The German GBIF node for mycology, associated with several database projects and important cryptogamic collections, is housed here. Among the phanerogams, emphasis is on specimens from central Europe, the Mediterranean, east and south west Africa, and the New World tropics. Along with recent specimens, the collection preserves important historical specimens and is used for inventories, conservation projects, and taxonomic research.
