The Institut de Recherche Agronomique de Guinée (IRAG) was established in 1986. Its collections comprise the Herbier SERG, created in 1962 by Fora CAMARA (± 7 000 specimens of plants, seed and fungi) and live collections in the IRAG Botanical Garden. Despite their relatively small size, these collections are a valuable resource for biodiversity management in a region that includes one of the last mountainous tropical dense humid forests of West Africa as well as protected forests and country agro-forests. The IRAG Herbarium plays a major role in knowledge management for conservation and contains biometric, pharmacological, phytogeographical and ethnobotanical information. The herbarium is an important tool for plant identification for a flora that contains over 3 000 Angiosperms species.
