The Herbarium Hamburgense (HBG) was founded in 1883 as a botanical museum and now contains approximately 1.8 million specimens, covering all major groups and geographical areas. Within the phanerogams, the herbarium focuses on plants from central Europe, especially northern Germany, but it holds several important historical collections of tropical plants from all continents, including the neotropics (Ule, Buchtin), India (Brandis), Australia (Dietrich), the Flora Malesiana region (Winkler, Elmer, Merrill), and, especially, Africa (e.g., Mildbraed, Dinklage, Drège, Ecklon and Zeyher, Dinter, Schlechter). Families that are well represented at HBG include Orchidaceae (Kränzlin), Lauraceae, and Aizoaceae. About one-third of the phanerogam collection was evacuated during World War II, some of it not returning ‘home’ until as late as 1990. After having been unavailable for some 50 years, these collections now are offered for study.
