The herbarium was founded around 1812. Currently it contains about 500.000 specimens (335.000 spermatophytes, 5000 ferns, 10.000 algae, 35.000 fungi, 35.000 lichens, 80.000 mosses), including about 6000 type collections. The historical collections comprise all groups worldwide, with a special focus on high plants from Australia, Europe, South Africa and Latin America (Brazil, Chile, Mexico). The historical base of HAL is the herbarium of D.F.L. von Schlechtendal, professor of botany in Halle and director of the botanical garden and herbarium between 1833 and 1866.
