The ‘Gaspar Xuarez’ Herbarium (BAA) was created in 1962 on the Lorenzo R. Parodi´s initiative, who named it Gaspar Xuarez in honour of the first Argentine botanist. The Herbarium is located in the Facultad de Agronomía of Buenos Aires University.
It has vascular plant collections that belong to the Argentine flora and neighbouring countries. These collections are specially rich in specimens from Buenos Aires province and Patagonia.
By now the Herbarium has near 200,000 specimens and it has an important collection of Poaceae, including those belonging to Lorenzo Parodi´s herbarium. It comprises 551 holotypes and isotypes as well as an indeterminated number of paratypes. There are also fragments of 310 types of Poaceae lost in Berlín Herbarium during the bomb attack.
Other important collections housed in BAA are: Elisa Nicora (Poaceae), Osvaldo Boelcke (Brassicaceae and Patagonian flora), Alberto Soriano (Patagonian vegetation), Eduardo Grondona (Buenos Aires and Tierra del Fuego provinces vegetation), Rolando León (Patagonian and Buenos Aires province vegetation), Gabriel H. Rua (Poaceae, mainly Paspalum), Roberto D. Tortosa (Rhamnaceae, Asteraceae) and Adriana Bartoli (Asteraceae, mainly Grindelia and Haplopappus).
The Herbarium is consulted by local and foreigner researchers and also by postgraduate students.
