Information
Perennial herb from a tuberous rootstock; stems prostrate or ascending, up to 30 cm long, densely pilose when young. Upper leaves palmately to pinnately 3–5-lobed with linear to lanceolate lobes; lower leaves up to 8 x 4 cm, mostly 2–5(–9)-lobed, ± sparsely pilose; petiole up to c. 3 cm long. Flowers solitary, subsessile or pedicel up to 12 mm long; bracts linear, up to c. 15 mm long. Sepals up to c. 12 mm long, often toothed, pilose. Corolla mauve or purple and white with darker centre, 1.4–3.2(–4) cm long, glabrous. Capsule globose, c. 6 mm in diam. Seeds densely appressed pubescent.

Notes
The single collection seen from Somalia (10º02´N, 43º02´E) has relatively large flowers and wide leaves and is var. oenotherae. Var. angustifolia (Oliv.) Verdc. occurs in Uganda and Kenya.
