Information
Annual herb branching from base, stems 3–15(–25) cm long. Leaves linear, subterete, 5–15(–20) x 1–2 mm, tip with brown spine 0.3–0.6 mm long; stipules 3–4 mm long. Flower-head globose, shortly pedunculate, 4–7-flowered, 7–12 mm diam.; bracts up to 4–7 mm long. Flowers 4–5 mm long, the receptacle fused with the bracts and forming a hardened structure eventually shed with the peduncle; sepals narrowly oblong, 2.5–3 mm, with woolly hairs near apex and base, tip with subterminal awn 0.25–1 mm long; stamens half as long as sepals; style 0.5–0.8 mm long. Capsule slightly papillose at the tup. Seed reniform, dark brown, 2–2.5 x 1.5 mm.

N3 Eritrea, Djibouti, north to Egypt, west to Algeria, Cape Verde Is., Saudi Arabia north to S Iraq and S Iran.
