Information
Robust annual with solitary stem or tufted; stems 30–50 cm long and 1–4 mm thick, but to 8 mm thick across the sheaths, triangular, glabrous. Leaf-blades 10–40 cm long and 3–8 mm wide, flat, rather thick and soft below, scabrid on margin and midrib near the tip; sheaths rather wide, straw-coloured to brown with transparent scarious margins. Inflorescence a compound anthela of large sessile and stalked spikes; major branches to 10 cm long. Spikelets 5–10 x 1–2 mm, linear-lanceolate. Glumes 2–3 mm long, obovate, light brown or reddish brown with a very prominent wide pale marginal border. Style with 2 branches. Nutlet 1.5–2 x 0.7–1.2 mm, obovate to elliptic, grey, brown or blackish, minutely papillose.
