Shrub or much-branched tree up to 20 m tall, sometimes with thick but short trunk; milky latex scarce; bark dark brown, fissured; young branches and petioles with brownish puberulence, becoming glabrous. Leaves: petiole 0.5–l.5(–2.5) cm long; blade leathery, elliptic-obovate to obovate, 3.5–5.5(–8) x 1.5–2.5(–3.5) cm, broadly to narrowly cuneate at the base, rounded to occasionally emarginate or rarely subacuminate at the apex, upper surface dark glossy green, lower surface dull green, subglabrous or minutely puberulous, with finely raised reticulate venation; lateral nerves numerous, ascending; stipules not observed. Flowers usually several in each leaf axil; flower buds elongated to semiglobular, c. 4 mm in diam.; pedicels straight, later often curved, 1–2.5 cm long, only moderately elongating in fruit, with brownish pubescence. Outer sepals densely brownish pubescent, lanceolate, 5–7(–9) mm long, inner sepals shorter, with membranous margin. Corolla-tube up to 2.5 mm long; corolla-lobes cream, 3-lobed, linear-lanceolate, up to 8 mm long. Stamens: filaments up to 2 mm long; anthers c. 2 mm long. Staminodes up to 5 mm long, densely pubescent externally. Ovary c. 2 mm long, densely pilose; style glabrescent, slender and tapering, c. 0.8(–1) cm long. Mature fruit an orange or yellowish-orange to reddish globose to subglobose berry, 1–2.5 cm in diam.; skin firm and tough. Seeds 1–5, rarely 6, obliquely elliptic to oblong, up to 2 x 5 mm; testa glossy, deep brown, hard and horny; scar almost basal.
