Description
A small tree to about 13 m high with a clean straight bole, of the high rainforest from Sierra Leone to Eastern Nigeria. FWTA, ed. 2, refers to an extension of this species into Gabon, but according to the Flore du Gabon (7) this species is not represented there.The stems are used for the framework of native houses in Liberia (4) The timber is suitable in short lengths for purposes requiring strength and resilience It is attractively figured when quarter-sawn (5).The bark is fibrous and scented (1). The Mendes of Sierra Leone use a decoction as a cure for blackwater fever (3), and at Joru the herbalists prescribe it as a wash and to take by mouth for ‘yellow fever’ (6).Stem-bark has shown a fairly strong presence of alkaloids (2).
