Shrub or tree up to c. 15 m tall, trunk up to 0.9 m in diam.; bark grey, smooth; young branches brownish, glabrous. Leaves alternate; stipules free, lateral, fully clasping the stem, caducous, glabrous, 0.5–1.5 cm long; petiole 3–13 cm long, thin (hence the characteristically trembling leaves on this species), glabrous; blade papery, drying pale green, cordate in outline, 4–15 x 3–15.5 cm, base broadly cordate, margin entire or slightly repand, apex ± long acuminate, glabrous on both sides, leaf base 5-veined, the lowermost pair of which gives off numerous side veins in the broad cordate leaf base, with 5–10 pairs of lateral veins. Figs 1–2 in the leaf axils, on peduncles 0.5–2 cm long, puberulous to glabrescent; basal bracts 3, broadly ovate, puberulous, basally united, apical part caducous, basal part persisting, receptacle subglobose, 5–12 mm in diam., puberulous or glabrescent; ostiole not protruding, 3-lipped.
