Semi-scandent evergreen shrub or liane. Leaves opposite; lamina membranous, elliptic to narrowly elliptic, up to 17.5 cm. long, 8 cm. wide, apex acute or acuminate, base usually rounded, sometimes subcuneate, glabrous except for the scales, rather densely lepidote on both surfaces; scales reddish golden, appearing deeply impressed, not contiguous; lateral nerves 7–10 pairs; petiole 5–15 mm. long. Inflorescence axillary, simple or paniculate due to the suppression of the leaves; spikes 3–5 cm. long; peduncle up to 2 cm. long, rufous pubescent. Flowers whitish to pale yellow, fragrant. Lower receptacle 2.5 mm. long, densely rufous lepidote; upper receptacle infundibuliform, 4.5 mm. long, 2.5 mm. wide, lepidote and densely pubescent. Sepals broadly deltate; petals broadly elliptic to subcircular, 1.5–2.5 mm. long, 1.5 mm. wide, conspicuously emarginate, glabrous. Stamen-filaments5–6 mm. long; anthers 0.5 mm. long. Disk inconspicuous. Style 5 mm. long. Fruit (fig. 5/25, p. 16) oblong-elliptic in outline, up to 5.5 cm. long and 3.5 cm. wide, lepidote and otherwise glabrous or nearly so; wings up to 10 mm. wide and somewhat decurrent at the base; apical peg up to 1 mm. long; stipe up to 1.3 cm. long.
