The only known specimen from Somalia was found in a sample of fodder. The species is unlikely to be native; more probably, it was introduced in fodder from Italy and was self-sown.
Loosely tufted with rhizomes, up to 150 cm high; leaves linear, up to 4 mm wide, scaberulous. Panicle 16 cm long, narrow and loose. Spikelets 4–4.5 mm long, tinged with purple; glumes lanceolate, scaberulous; lemma hyaline, 2.3 mm long, faintly 5-nerved, denticulate and shortly awned at the tip; callus-hairs longer than the lemma; palea 3/5 the length of the lemma.
