Climber to ± 8 m., growing from a tuberous rootstock. Leaf-blades grey-green, entire to deeply 3–5-lobed, broadly ovate to oblong-lanceolate or sub triangular, base cuneate to cordate or truncate, top acute to obtuse, 2–12(–14) by 1.5–11 cm., 3–5-nerved from base and 2–6 nerves from midrib, margin entire to irregularly sinuate or dentate; petiole 0.5–6 cm. Gland at blade-base 1, on the ± fleshy semicircular subpeltate blade-base; blade glands absent, marginal glands (0–)1–3(–4) at either side of the blade. Stipules triangular to broadly reniform, ± 1 mm., deeply dissected with minute glands at the tips. Inflorescences peduncled for (0.5–)2–15 cm., rarely subsessile on short-shoots, cincinnal, up to 30-flowered in ♂, 2–6-flowered in ♀, tendrils 1–3, 0.5–1.5 cm.; sterile tendrils simple or 3-fid, up to 15 cm. Dioecious or monoecious. Male flowers campanulate, including the 1.5–3 mm. long stipe 3–6 mm.; hypanthium cup-shaped, ± 1 by 2–3 mm.; calyx-tube absent, sepals ovate, obtuse to subacute, 1–2 mm.; petals ovate to elliptic-oblong, 1–1.5 mm., 1(–3)-nerved, subentire; filaments 1.5–2.5 mm., connate into a narrow tube for 1.2–1.5 mm., inserted at the base of the hypanthium; anthers ± 0.5 mm., obtuse; septa ± 0; corona consisting of threads 0.5–0.8 mm.; disk glands ± 0.3 mm. Female flowers broadly campanulate, fleshy, including the 0.5–2 mm. long stipe 2.5–6 mm.; hypanthium cup- to saucer-shaped, ± fleshy, 1–2 by 1.5–2 mm.; calyx-tube 0, sepals subovate, obtusish, 1–2 mm., entire; petals obovate-oblong, obtuse, 1–1.5 mm.; gynophore 0.2–0.5 mm., ovary ellipsoid to subglobose, 1.7–2.5 mm.; styles up to 0.5 mm., ± free; stigmas subreniform, papillate-laciniate, each 1–1.5 mm. in diameter. Fruits 1–2 per inflorescence, subglobose to ellipsoid to ovoid, excluding the 1–3 mm. long gynophore 1.5–3 by 1.2–2 cm.; pericarp chartaceous to coriaceous, bright red. Seeds 10–25 per capsule, subovate, 5–6 mm.
