A prostrate herb diffusely branched from the base, sometimes rooting at the nodes, more or less pilose (often bifariously on the branches); branches usually 9–12 in. long, herbaceous or sometimes becoming almost woody, hollow. Leaves petiolate, ovate, elliptic-ovate or rarely suborbicular, 1/2–1 1/4 in. long, 1/2– 3/4 in. broad (rarely 1 1/2–2 in. long, 1–1 1/4 in. broad), obtuse or subacute, rounded, slightly cordate, truncate or somewhat cuneate at the base, crenate-serrate (often coarsely) or crenate, more or less pilose on both sides or sometimes almost glabrous; petiole usually about 3 (rarely up to 6) lin. long. Racemes 1–2 1/2 in. long, often 2- (sometimes up to 5-) flowered; bracts linear-oblong, 1 3/4–3 lin. long, obtuse; pedicels 2–4 lin. long. Calyx 2–2 1/2 lin. long in flower, 3–3 1/2 lin. long in fruit; segments oblong, elliptic-oblong or spathulate-elliptic, obtuse, ciliate and sometimes pilose inside and outside. Corolla 3–3 1/2 lin. long, cobalt-blue (pinky-white, Johnston). Style 1–1 1/2 lin. long. Capsule obovate, compressed, pilose or rarely glabrous, 1/2– 2/3 lin. shorter than the calyx.

Annual, prostrate herb, trailing or ascending, branched from or towards base; branches up to 7.5 cm. long or occasionally much more, of ten rooting at nodes, more or less densely pilose with long, white hairs; stem hollow, sometimes becoming somewhat woody. Leaves opposite, petiolate, lamina 15–45 x 10–36 mm., broadly ovate to ovate-elliptic, obtuse to subacute, shallowly cordate to subtruncate at base, at rimes subcuneate, shallowly to coarsely crenate-serrate; petiole 4–20 mm. long. Racemes axillary, 1–7.5 cm. long, 2–7-flowered; flowers blue, bracteate; bracts 3–4 mm. long, 0.5–1.3 mm. wide, linear-oblong, obtuse. Pedicels (2)6–10(15) mm. long, slender. Calyx 3.5–4.75 mm. long; lobes 1–2 mm. long, oblong to spatulate-oblong, obtuse, long-ciliate. Corolla 6–7 mm. long, upper lobe to 4 mm. wide, broadly ovate to subcircular. Capsule 3.5–4 x (3.5)4(5) mm., obcordate in outline, compressed, long pilose, or only ciliate on suture.

Trailing perennial herb with prostrate stems up to 80(–150) cm, rooting at the nodes, sometimes profusely branched, sparsely to rather densely pubescent in two lines. Leaves broadly ovate, 1–5 cm long, 0.5–3.5 cm wide, rounded to subcordate at base, subacute to obtuse, margins rather coarsely crenate, pilose to subglabrous on both sides; petioles 4–9(–18) mm long. Inflorescence of lateral racemes, 2–5 cm long, 2–4(–8)-flowered; bracts linear, 4 mm long; pedicels filiform, ± 5 mm long. Calyx 4–5 mm long in flower, 6–7 mm long in fruit; segments elliptic-oblong, ciliate. Corolla blue; tube white; lobes ± 6 mm long. Filaments white; anthers yellow. Erect to prostrate or hanging herbs or subshrubs, up to 60 cm tall when erect or up to 100 cm when hanging, sparsely to densely pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs. Leaves lanceolate to ovate or suborbicular, 1.5–60 x 1–45 mm, cuneate to very shortly attenuate at the base, obtuse to acute at the apex, subentire to serrate-dentate or crenate; petiole 1–25 mm long. Flowers solitary or arranged in a loose to condensed terminal raceme; pedicels 1–6 mm long. Calyx 3–8 mm long. Corolla yellow to orange yellow, often with a reddish upper lip and with reddish-brown spots inside, sometimes also on the lobes of the lower lip, sometimes turning pinkish to reddish when fading, 8–18 mm long, sparsely to densely pilose with glandular and eglandular hairs outside. Stamens almost glabrous to sparsely pilose at the base with mainly glandular hairs. Style glabrous. Capsule ovoid, 4–8 x 2–4 mm, rounded to pointed at the apex, glabrous to sparsely pilose.
