From the Sudan and Ethiopia southwards to the Transvaal. In the Transvaal it is rather rare and occurs in bushland and scrub woodland, mostly below 800 m, often on sandy soils. Map 36.
Shrub or small tree up to 6 m tall, usually smaller. Leaves mostly elliptic or obovate. Inflorescence a 5—12-flowered, bracteate fascicle; bracts up to 5 mm long, subulate. Petals greenish white turning yellow with age. Staminal tube white, 10—15 mm long. Capsule 7 X 15 mm, 10-valved, depressed-globose, shallowly sulcate, glabrous, leathery or thinly woody. Seeds black, 5x3 mm, with a small orange or red aril completely concealed except for a horn-like extension which protrudes beyond the apex of the seed. Chromosome number. 2n = 50 (Zimbabwe). Deciduous shrub or small tree to 10 m tall; bark rough, brown, flaking in large pieces. Leaf-blade elliptic to oblanceolate or obovate, rarely lanceolate, up to 15 x 8 cm, lower surface densely and softly pubescent to glabrous, rounded or obtuse, rarely emarginate or apiculate at the apex, cuneate at the base; petiole up to 1.8 cm long. Inflorescences 5–18-flowered sessile or subsessile clusters, usually from the spur-shoots. Flowers fragrant, greenish white, ageing yellow, often appearing before the leaves. Petals oblanceolate-oblong, 1.25–2.2 x 0.3–0.45 cm. Staminal tube shortly cylindrical, 0.8–1.5 cm long, flared at apex, inner surface occluded by long hairs in a dense band 0.2 mm thick, otherwise glabrous. Staminal appendages as long as anthers, almost completely united into a shallowly lobed frill; tips of connectives c. 0.1 mm long. Style exserted 0.8–1 cm, style-head ovoid-cylindric. Capsule depressed-globose, c. 0.7 x 1.5 cm, thinly woody. Seeds black with orange to red aril.

Shrub or small to medium-sized tree (1) 2–8 (16) m. tall, sometimes weak-stemmed and scrambling; first-year branchlets densely puberulous, second-year almost glabrous, reddish-brown or purple-brown, often with conspicuous white or pale brown lenticels. Leaf-lamina up to 10 × 7 cm., mostly obovate or obovate-elliptic, lower surface shortly pubescent and with tufts of hairs in axils of secondary nerves, apex rounded to apiculate, base cuneate; petiole up to 1·8 cm. long. Inflorescence a terminal or axillary congested cyme or false raceme; peduncle 3–4·5 cm. long, stout; bracts usually 3–4 to each flower, the longest up to 1·5 cm. long, foliaceous; pedicels 1–1·5 cm. long. Calyx 5–8 mm. long, deeply lobed, tomentellous. Petals 12–14 × 4 mm., creamy white tinged with green, becoming yellowish with age, spathulate, pubescent outside. Staminal tube 1·2–1·4 cm. long, distally expanded, bearded at the throat with long hairs arising mostly from the filaments and a few from the appendages, otherwise glabrous inside; appendages irregularly 1–3-lobed, alternate with or opposite the anthers, fused in lower half to form a frill continuing the staminal tube beyond insertion of filaments. Ovary 10–12-locular, densely pilose; style 1·5–2·2 cm. long, pilose at base; style-head broadly ovoid-cylindric. Capsule 6 × 10 mm., depressed-globose, shallowly sulcate, woody, puberulous; aril covering half the seed.
