A scrambling shrub (? or simple, erect canes), 1.5–2 m. tall (? or more). Flowering branches (and, apparently the turions) densely covered with ± fulvous, ± bristly hairs; prickles up to 6 mm. long, ± deflexed, narrow. Leaves imparipinnate (2-jugate), or the uppermost trifoliolate; leaflets ovate to ovate-elliptic, or oblong, 4–8 × 3–5 cm., acute, sometimes long-acuminate, basally round to subcordate, shallowly but sharply serrated or biserrated with excurrent nerves, green and rather thinly hairy above, softly whitish-tomentose beneath; terminal petiolule 1–3 cm. long, the lateral ones not exceeding 5 mm. Inflorescence a short, congested, narrowly cylindrical, terminal panicle scarcely exceeding 8 × 4 cm., not much exceeding the leaves, with the lowest branches 2.5–6 cm. long, with or without axillary panicles below. Pedicels hairy, 3–4 mm. long. Calyx ± 6.5 mm. long, deeply divided into lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, acuminate lobes ± 5.75 mm. long, whitish-tomentose on the inside, interspersed with pale fulvous bristly hairs on the outside. Petals absent, or fugacious. Carpels glabrous. Fruit yellowish when young, becoming red or orange-red later, edible (see Note).
