DISTR. U 4; T 1, 4 widespread throughout tropical Africa south of the Equator
Usually a dwarf herb, 3–9 cm tall. Stems simple or branched from the base, sometimes pseudo-di- or trichotomously branched. Leaves 15–60 mm long, longer than the proximal inflorescence; wing sepals 2–3≈2–2.8 mm; seeds (1.5–)1.6–2.2≈0.6–0.9, whitish-silky-pubescent, rarely puberulous. Fig. 5: 6, p. 11.

Annual erect herb, 6–18 cm tall. Stems slender, usually pseudo-di- or trichotomously branched, apparently terminating in an inflorescence and growth continuing by lateral branches, usually exceeding the primary one, crisped-pubescent. Leaves alternate, petiolate (petiole 1–3 mm, crisped-pubescent), lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, 15–30(–60)≈1–10 mm, subacute to rounded, base cuneate, glabrous or very minutely pubescent on both sides. Flowers whitish, pinkish or lilac, in much congested terminal racemes, often subglobose, 8–25 mm long, rachis crisped-pubescent; bracts lanceolate, 1–1.5 mm long, usually pubescent, persistent; bracteoles lanceolate, 1 mm long, usually pubescent, persistent; pedicels 1.5–3 mm, usually crisped-pubescent. Posterior sepal keel-shaped, 1.5–2≈0.8 mm, pubescent or glabrescent; wing sepals elliptic to suborbicular, 3–4≈2–3 mm, pubescent towards the base; anterior sepals keel-shaped, 1–1.5 mm long, free. Upper petals obliquely elliptic, constricted below the middle, 2.5≈1.5–2 mm, pubescent at the base; carina 2.5≈1.25 mm; crest 1.5–2 mm long, fimbriate. Stamens 8. Capsule elliptic to suborbicular in outline, 2–2.5≈2–2.8 mm, glabrous, narrowly winged (wing 0.2 mm wide). Seeds ellipsoid to subglobose, 1.5–2.3≈0.7–1 mm, brownish silky-pubescent, rarely puberulous; caruncle subsymmetric, 0.4–0.6 mm long, with three small appendages, 0.2–0.3 mm long.
